'X-Men' Kitty Pryde Spin-off Nabs Writer and Title: '143'

Feb 13, 2018

Updated: Comic book veteran Brian Michael Bendis has been hired to write the Kitty Pryde project that Deadpool director Tim Miller has been developing, according to Deadline. It's also received a provisional title: 143. That refers to Uncanny X-Men No. 143, a Marvel comic book issue that featured Kitty Pryde on her first solo mission, in which she faced off against a demon, per The Hollywood Reporter

(Previously-pubished article follows.)

One of the most successful superhero movies of all time, Deadpool has also become one of the most influential. The R-rated Marvel Comics adaptation has proven not to be a fluke phenomenon, now that fellow Fox release Logan pulled off a similar feat without being very family friendly. So, understandably, Fox and other studios are trying to replicate those critical and box office victories with other edgier comic book properties.

Fox has a few movies in the same franchise coming out this year, including the X-Men spin-off The New Mutants, which might not similarly aim for an R rating from the MPAA but has a gritty horror-inspired story and tone. They've also got the R-rated Deadpool follow-up and the sequel X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the title of which implies a dark tone, as well. Beyond this year, Gambit is the only thing greenlit, but other potential installments are in development, such as James Franco's hard-R-aiming Multiple Man movie and an X-23-focused Logan spin-off

Another one in the works, Collider has just confirmed, is a Kitty Pryde solo spin-off. The special-powered mutant character has appeared in four of Fox's X-Men movies in the past, initially with minor cameo appearances by different actresses, then portrayed by Ellen Page in X-Men: The Last Stand (see below) and X-Men: Days of Future PastDeadpool director Tim Miller is actually the one leading this project, which may or may not actually go into production down the road.

Of course, there are many questions we now have that just can't be answered for the time being. Will Miller direct the movie? Will Page reprise her role? Will any other characters from the franchise or comics join her on screen? What sort of adventure will she get? Could we see her befriend Lockheed, her dragon-like alien pal, and then could it lead into an Excalibur movie? Or perhaps she'll be linked to Magik, her BFF in the comics who will be introduced in The New Mutants (played by Anya Taylor-Joy). Who knows?

Pryde, who has also gone by the monikers Sprite and Shadowcat, has the ability to move through objects, such as doors and walls. She can also make others intangible with this "phasing" power and she can disrupt electrical fields. It's a very useful power in a team setting but could also make for an interesting individual character piece, especially if Miller keeps the very underrated Page involved rather than recasting the part.

A few years ago, writer/director Joss Whedon (Justice League) was rumored to be interested in doing a Kitty Pryde movie. At the time, Page told Vulture that she'd love to come back for something like that, saying:

Kitty Pryde's awesome. I'm super grateful to be the actress who's gotten to be her, and you only desperately hope that the true fans who have a right to demand what they want and who have been passionate about these stories for a really long time, that you can pull it off for them. I would be so thrilled to play Kitty Pryde again. I really would.

Make it so, Fox!
